What is air-entrained concrete?
Air-entrained concrete is concrete mixed with an admixture that creates millions of tiny, evenly distributed air voids, improving resistance to freeze-thaw cycles and road salt damage.
Microscopic air bubbles are intentionally introduced into concrete during mixing through chemical admixtures or air-entrainment agents. These voids, typically 0.01 to 0.3 millimeters in diameter, make up 3 to 8 percent of the concrete's total volume and remain dispersed throughout the hardened slab or structure.
The purpose is straightforward: when water seeps into concrete and freezes, it expands. Without air voids, this expansion cracks the surface and shortens the concrete's lifespan. The tiny bubbles act as relief pockets, giving expanding ice a space to expand into rather than fracturing the surrounding paste. This is especially relevant in the Charlotte Metro area, where winter temperatures regularly dip below freezing and thaw cycles are common.
Air-entrained concrete is standard for exposed slabs, driveways, parking areas, and any surface that will experience moisture and freeze-thaw stress. It also improves workability during placement and reduces scaling damage from deicing salts that contractors and property owners sometimes apply to combat icy conditions. The trade-off is a modest reduction in compressive strength compared to non-air-entrained mixes, but the durability gains far outweigh this for outdoor, weather-exposed applications.
When specifying concrete for driveways, sidewalks, or other exterior work in the Charlotte region, confirming air entrainment is part of a sound specification. Many driveway contractors include it as standard practice for this climate zone.
