What is a broom finish?

A broom finish is a simple surface treatment applied to freshly poured concrete by dragging a broom across the wet material. The bristles create fine parallel lines or a cross-hatch pattern depending on the broom type and technique, producing a subtly textured appearance that differs from smooth or polished concrete.

This finish serves a practical purpose beyond aesthetics. The texture increases traction underfoot, reducing slip and fall risk on wet surfaces. For that reason, broom finishes appear frequently on driveways, sidewalks, pool decks, and commercial entryways where safety and slip resistance matter. The rougher surface is especially valuable in the Charlotte Metro area, where rain and moisture are common.

Concrete contractors typically apply broom finishes during the final stages of pouring, after the surface has begun to set but remains workable. The timing must be precise: too early and the broom may disturb the concrete; too late and the material will be too hard to texture effectively. Different broom styles, bristle stiffness, and dragging direction produce variations in texture depth and pattern.

Unlike decorative finishes or polished surfaces, a broom finish is economical and straightforward, adding minimal cost to a standard concrete job while delivering genuine safety benefits. The texture naturally hides minor surface imperfections and requires no special sealing or maintenance beyond normal concrete care.
