What is concrete mix design?

Concrete mix design is the precise formula of cement, aggregates, water, and additives proportioned to achieve required strength, durability, and workability for a specific construction application.

A concrete mix design is the engineered recipe that determines how much cement, coarse and fine aggregate, water, and chemical or mineral additives are combined to create concrete suited to a particular job. Rather than guessing at proportions, contractors in the Charlotte Metro area rely on mix designs to ensure their pours meet structural requirements and perform in local climate conditions.

The key components work together in specific ratios. Portland cement acts as the binder. Coarse aggregate (gravel or crushed stone) and fine aggregate (sand) provide bulk and stability. Water activates the cement through hydration. Additives like air entrainment, water reducers, or pozzolanic materials modify how the concrete behaves, cures, and holds up over time.

Mix design matters because it directly affects concrete strength (measured in PSI), durability against freeze-thaw cycles, slump (workability for placement), and long-term performance. A residential driveway requires different proportions than a commercial foundation or parking structure. Factors like exposure to moisture, traffic loads, and seasonal temperature swings in North Carolina influence what gets specified.
