What is a control joint?
A control joint is a deliberately cut groove in concrete that directs cracks to occur in predictable locations, preventing random and damaging fractures across the surface.
Control joints are sawed or tooled grooves cut into fresh or cured concrete to manage how the material cracks as it shrinks during curing and aging. Rather than allowing concrete to crack randomly and unpredictably, control joints channel stress toward weak points created by the grooves themselves, resulting in straighter, narrower cracks that remain in the planned locations.
Spacing and depth depend on slab thickness and exposure. A typical rule of thumb for driveways and patios is to place control joints at intervals equal to the slab thickness multiplied by 24 to 36 (measured in inches). For a 4-inch driveway, joints might be spaced 8 to 12 feet apart. Depth usually runs one-fourth to one-third of the slab thickness, or roughly 1 to 1.5 inches in residential concrete work.
Control joints differ from expansion joints in both function and placement. Expansion joints allow concrete to move and compress when temperature changes cause the material to expand and contract, and they typically feature a flexible filler material. Control joints simply direct cracking and do not require filler. On concrete driveways and slabs in the Charlotte Metro area, contractors typically use control joints for the primary crack management, with expansion joints reserved for areas where thermal movement is significant or where slabs meet fixed structures.
Proper control joint placement and depth matter because poorly spaced or shallow joints can fail to direct cracks effectively, leaving you with damage that compromises both appearance and durability.
