What is fiber-reinforced concrete?

Concrete that contains synthetic or steel fibers dispersed throughout the mix to reduce shrinkage cracks and improve structural integrity.

Fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) incorporates small fibers, typically synthetic polypropylene or steel, evenly distributed throughout the concrete mixture. These fibers act as crack arresters by bridging micro-fractures that form during the drying and curing process, which is especially important in slabs and foundations where shrinkage cracking is common.

The fibers work by distributing stress across a wider area than concrete alone can handle, limiting crack growth before it becomes visible or structurally significant. This approach differs from traditional reinforcement like wire mesh or rebar, which are placed at specific depths to resist bending forces. Instead, FRC addresses the internal stress that develops uniformly as concrete sets.

For concrete contractors in the Charlotte area, fiber reinforcement serves as either a standalone solution for non-structural applications or as a supplement to mesh in slabs on grade, floors, and some foundation work. It is mixed directly into the concrete at the plant, so there is no additional placement labor on the job site. The cost varies depending on fiber type and dosage, but the benefit appears in fewer call-backs for cosmetic cracks and improved long-term durability, particularly in exposed slabs subject to UV and freeze-thaw cycling.

Contractors often specify FRC when crack control is a priority and traditional mesh placement becomes impractical or when an owner wants added insurance against early shrinkage cracking. It does not replace structural reinforcement but addresses a common durability concern in concrete work.
