What is the difference between mudjacking and polyurethane foam leveling?

Mudjacking and polyurethane foam leveling are two concrete-lifting techniques that inject material beneath sunken slabs to restore grade, differing in their base material, weight, and curing speed.

When concrete slabs settle or sink over time, contractors in the Charlotte Metro area use two main injection methods to lift them back to level. The oldest approach, mudjacking, pumps a cement-based slurry (a mixture of Portland cement, sand, water, and sometimes lime) through holes drilled in the slab. This heavy material fills voids beneath the concrete and provides weight-bearing support. Mudjacking typically requires 24 to 48 hours to cure before the slab can bear full traffic.

Polyurethane foam leveling works differently. Expanding polyurethane foam is injected through smaller holes and hardens within minutes to a few hours by chemical reaction, creating a rigid, lightweight base that lifts the slab. Because the foam expands as it cures, it fills voids more completely and applies less downward pressure on the surrounding soil.

The core differences matter for damaged slabs. Mudjacking uses denser material that cures slower but costs less per square foot. Polyurethane foam cures almost immediately, allowing faster return to service, but weighs roughly 2 pounds per cubic foot compared to mudjacking's 130-plus pounds. Polyurethane also resists water infiltration better.
