What is self-leveling concrete?

Self-leveling concrete is a pourable, low-viscosity cement-based material that flows across an uneven substrate and hardens into a smooth, flat surface before final flooring or coatings are applied.

Self-leveling concrete, also called self-leveling underlayment or self-leveling overlay, is a thin pourable cement product that spreads across high and low spots on a floor and sets level without troweling or mechanical smoothing. Contractors use it indoors to prepare problem subfloors, fill dips from settling or water damage, and create a uniform base before installing tile, wood, epoxy, polished concrete, or other finished flooring.

The material relies on its fluid consistency to seek its own level across the existing slab. Once poured, it fills valleys and settles into a thin, even layer that cures hard enough for finishing work within hours or days, depending on the product and thickness applied. This saves time compared to manual leveling and reduces the labor-intensive grinding and filling needed to address major floor irregularities across a large area.

Self-leveling is common in residential and commercial interior repairs in the Charlotte Metro area, particularly when addressing old concrete, moisture-damaged subfloors, or areas where multiple floor heights need reconciliation. The product works best on sound concrete substrates free of significant cracking or spalling. Contractors working on stamped, polished, or specialty concrete finishes often rely on self-leveling products to ensure a proper base for their end result.
