A slump test measures how far wet concrete settles when a cone mold is lifted, indicating the mix's workability and moisture content.
The slump test is a field procedure that gauges concrete consistency and workability by measuring how much a sample of wet concrete slumps, or settles downward, after a standardized metal cone is removed. A technician fills a 12-inch tall cone in layers, tamps it, then lifts the cone vertically. The vertical distance the concrete drops from the cone's original height, measured to the highest point of the slumped pile, is the slump value, typically reported in inches.
For flatwork like driveways, parking lots, and slabs across the Charlotte area, typical slump ranges fall between 4 and 5 inches, though specifications vary by project and local conditions. A slump that is too low signals a stiff mix that may not fill forms properly or bond layers evenly. A slump that is too high indicates excess water in the mix, which weakens the cured concrete and creates durability problems.
Concrete crews check slump immediately when the truck arrives on site. This quick test confirms the batch meets job specifications before the pour begins. If the slump is out of range, the driver can adjust the mix or the load may be rejected, preventing costly problems with finished surfaces or structural performance. The test takes only minutes and requires minimal equipment, making it the standard quality check across the region.
