What is subgrade vs subbase?
Subgrade is the compacted native soil layer directly beneath a concrete slab, while subbase is the gravel or crushed stone layer placed on top of the subgrade to improve drainage and stability.

The subgrade is the native soil that exists at the site, compacted to a specified density before any concrete work begins. The subbase is the layer of gravel, crushed stone, or recycled asphalt placed on top of that compacted soil.
The distinction matters because each layer handles a different job. A properly compacted subgrade provides a stable base that resists settling over time. In the clay-heavy soils common to the Piedmont region, subgrade preparation prevents uneven subsidence that cracks concrete. The subbase sits above it as a drainage layer and a leveling course. It allows water to escape from beneath the slab rather than pooling against the concrete, which would accelerate deterioration through freeze-thaw cycles and reactive soil movement.
